As a stats nerd but not a computer nerd, I agree with the general sentiment of what James said. That’s not to say the micro topics driven by tracking data and machine learning aren’t valuable - they absolutely are and I find a lot of it very interesting - but I do think the analytics community has lost the forest for the trees.
I would love to see a Jamesian analysis done on every sport and attempt to answer all of his macro level questions about what forces are driving success in each league.
