Good discussion about YAC. One reason nerds tend to scoff at YAC (myself included) is because the mainstream sports media doesn’t adjust for it at all. Someone could have 300 yards and 4 TD on a bunch of screen passes and pundits will be like “What a prolific aerial display by quarterback X!”
Anyway I agree that QB’s deserve partial credit for YAC but not full credit. I remember Brian Burke saying that QBR takes the average of expected YAC and actual YAC for each play; that seems like a reasonable solution.
PFF grades could improved by having a separate throw grade and decision grade. So a lot of these Purdy YAC plays would get a 0 for the throw and a +0.5 for the decision.
